Karaikudi Vina Tradition

Through the years, the art of Veena playing has produced many great musicians. Among the Tanjore traditions, the Karaikudi style of Veena playing stands out and has produced many generations of musicians dedicated to the mastery of the art. Tracing back the lineage, one encounters a series of Veena players of note: Malayappa Iyer (c.1750) of third generation, Venkatesa Iyer (c. 1780), Subbaraya Iyer (c.1810) and the Karaikudi Veena Brothers Subbarama Iyer (1883 - 1936) and Sambasiva Iyer (1888 - 1958) of the seventh generation. The Karaikudi Veena tradition has, over the years, been preserved in its purity. Contemporary musicians of this tradition continue to work and enhance within the traditional parameters.
